CALOR GAS

If I don’t have a Calor Gas cylinder do I need to pay a cylinder hire charge?

Yes, you will need to pay a cylinder hire charge which covers the cost and maintenance of the Calor cylinder. You must have an empty bottle if you are ordering a refill only.

How much is the cylinder hire charge for Calor Gas?

For most cylinders it is £49.99 but this varies on the size and type of cylinder.

If I return my Calor cylinder do I get the cylinder hire charge back?

As long as you keep your receipt (proof of purchase) and are able to show the receipt to the driver on collection of the cylinder you will get a proportion of the cylinder hire charge back. The proportion refunded is based on the number of years you have had the cylinder. Please note that refunds are not returned by the drivers. The office will contact you within 2 working days to arrange your refund. Please see the table below.

Please Note: Calor cylinders always remain the property of Calor Gas Ltd

Which Calor gas cylinder should I use for my Barbecue / Portable Heater?

Appliances generally state which cylinders they are compatible with, it will depend upon the regulator supplied. Most BBQs use the green patio gas bottle and mobile heaters use butane cylinders. If you are unsure call us on 0208 949 5435 for advice.

How can I monitor how much gas is left in a cylinder?

Calor’s 5kg and 13kg Patio Gas cylinders are fitted with Calor’s new Gas Trac – an indicator which tells you when you are running low on gas.

For all other cylinders, the empty tare weight can be found on a metal disc on the shroud which gives the weight of the empty cylinder in pounds and ounces. To convert this to kilograms multiply this number by 0.45. Once you have the empty weight of the cylinder, you weigh the full cylinder on scales then take the empty tare cylinder weight off the total. This will give you how much gas you have left in the cylinder. If this calculation is difficult or confusing please telephone for advice.

What is the empty weight of cylinders?

All bottles will vary depending on their size, etc. The weight written on the metal disc on the shroud is the weight of the empty cylinder.

How full is a Calor gas cylinder in a full condition, in percentage terms?

All cylinders are 80-87% full as space needs to be left for the expansion of liquid. The weight on the front of the cylinder is the total weight of gas in the bottle.

Disposal and Return

I have inherited unwanted empty Calor cylinders and I would like to know how to dispose of them. Would you be able to arrange their removal?

Yes, we are able to collect empty Calor cylinders. Please call us on 0208 949 5435 to arrange a collection day. There is a charge for the collection service.

I have an empty cylinder which I no longer need but do not have the cylinder receipt of purchase; does that mean that I am unable to claim any available refund?

Unfortunately, yes, as we do not know the length of time you have been hiring the cylinder. However, we are happy to dispose of the Calor cylinder for a charge of £10 if you no longer require it.

I would like to exchange my cylinder for a different size, can I do this?

You can, but only with certain cylinders as Calor have introduced a strict group exchange policy. Please call to check.

I have purchased a Calor Gas cylinder and want to know if I should have received a regulator with it, or do I have to buy one separately?

Regulators are usually supplied with the appliance. Should you require a regulator you can purchase one from our website.

Do cylinders come delivered to me sealed? How are they sealed?

Yes, there is a plastic dust cap on the valve on most cylinder sizes.

Taking cylinders abroad/availability of Calor Gas abroad?

You can take standard Calor cylinders abroad but you will not be able to purchase them outside the UK. Please check with the ferry or tunnel operator for their travelling conditions. Campingaz cylinders are available for exchange abroad.

PORTABLE HEATERS

What’s the difference between radiant and catalytic heaters?

Radiant Heaters – There is a visible flame which heats white thermal plaques. Most heaters have 2 or 3 thermal plaques that radiate the heat. The overall heat output is higher than a catalytic heater.

Catalytic Heaters – Heat is produced by the chemical reaction of burning gas over a catalyst bed, which is a wire mesh frame to the front of the heater. This produces a safe, flameless source of radiant heat. There is no visible flame. They produce less moisture than the radiant heaters but they also attract moisture. Therefore, they are not suitable for damp rooms or conservatories.

How can I work out how long my cylinder will last?

The equation to work out how long a certain gas cylinder will last when an appliance has a certain thermal output is:

Number of hours of burn time = 14 x cylinder size (eg 15kg) ÷ Power output of heater (eg 4.2)

The thermal output of the heater i.e. the amount of warmth that it produces, is measured in kilowatts hours and will be in your heater instructions.

Can you connect the cylinder to the appliance for us?

Yes, please ask the specially trained driver to do this for you.

Which size gas cylinder would you recommend for a mobile cabinet heater?

Generally, a 15kg Butane Cylinder is required for standard sized heaters. If you have a compact heater, you will need a 7kg Butane. If you have any doubt please call us on 0208 949 5435.

Are there any rooms a mobile heater should not be used in?

  • Garages as petrol vapour may be present, or wherever highly flammable materials are stored.
  • Bathrooms or shower rooms.
  • Bedrooms where there is readily combustible material such as bed coverings, curtains etc.

Should the room where I am using the mobile heater be well ventilated?

The room in which the mobile heater is being used must be well ventilated; this is to ensure that the mobile heater is receiving an adequate supply of fresh air. Ensure that if the room has ventilators or grills that they are not blocked. Most rooms have fresh air entering around the doors and windows, however, if the room becomes stuffy open a window or door immediately.
